A Japanese festival “Blooming Sakura 2009” will take place in Khabarovsk from 20th-23d March 2009. It is organized by the Japanese Consulate General and the Khabarovsk Foreign Countries Friendship Society. During the festival one of the city’s movie-theaters will introduce a Japanese animated film and two fiction films to the Russian audience. Those interested   in Japanese arts will be invited to master classes on traditional Edo turtin and Edo sudare crafts. Edo turtin is an art of hand-drawn paper lanterns with Edo-style calligraphy painted on them. Edo sudare is a Japanese traditional wickerwork technique for making screens, carpets, blinds and placemats using natural materials like reed, bamboo, cane and clover.
