According to Deita.ru information site, on September 9-12 Vladivostok will host an international summit on conservation and protection of tigers held in Russia for the first time. The summit will be attended by 12 of the 14 countries where tigers live. Decision to conduct the “Tiger Forum” was signed by Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this year on January 26. The situation concerning tiger preservation on the globe is described by ecologists as catastrophic. Currently, 4,000 tigers live in the wild; for the past 100 year the tiger population has reduced by 25 times. At the same time Russia (namely its Maritime and Khabarovsk territories) is the only country of the tiger’s natural habitat where the population of this animal has increased from the middle of the last century and is considered to be stable with the potential to rise. The total number of the Amur tiger nowadays is around 500.
